I am thrilled to announce the launch of my candidacy to run for the President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists!

I know that it is a tough time for patients and Psychiatrists given rising demand, increasing complexity of presentations and chronic underinvestment in mental health. For us as Psychiatrists, there are additional challenges – fear of being scapegoated for systemic failures and disempowerment through medical role substitutions.

As Psychiatrists we have expertise in – relational care, biopsychosocial formulations, systemic thinking, evidence-based scientific practice – these are key skills relevant to current psychiatric and medical practice.

With me, you can expect a forward thinking, progressive approach rooted in these core values of good psychiatry, foregrounding the role of psychiatrists as medical leaders. I will see it as my role to amplify the medical voice in every Board of every healthcare provider across the UK.

From #DeansGrandRounds to #Public Mental Health leadership course, to innovative initiatives that reduce differential attainment, creating the college’s first ever diploma program and leading Digital literacy and Neurodiversity Frameworks, alongside my charity work with Doctors in Distress – my work illustrates my values. My recent editorial in BJPsych - Reclaiming medical leadership: an imperative for psychiatry and psychiatrists | The British Journal of Psychiatry | Cambridge Core – offers a window to my thoughts.

Over the next few weeks as I develop and share my detailed manifesto, please, reach out to me, share your views and vision on what you would like the next President to focus on, and let us run this campaign that speaks to collective and collaborative leadership.

I look forward to receiving your suggestions. Please use this google form or the comments section. Thank you and let’s put our ideas in to action!
